About SS Atlantus Concrete Shipwreck
At Sunset Beach, a jagged shape rises from the Delaware Bay: the remains of a ship made of concrete. The SS Atlantus was built during World War I, when steel was scarce. In 1926, she broke loose during a storm and ran aground near the southern tip of New Jersey.
Time and waves have broken the hull into dark, half-submerged sections. You cannot board the wreck, and the amount visible changes with the tide. The best visit is a walk to the end of Sunset Boulevard to look out from the beach, preferably near sunset, when a concrete ship on the horizon feels especially improbable.
