About Cape May Point Beach Bunker
A concrete World War II gun battery sits on the sand at Cape May Point like a stranded fortress. Battery 223 was built for coastal defense in the 1940s, originally set well back from the shoreline and disguised with earth. Decades of erosion changed the scenery around it, leaving the structure exposed near the water.
The bunker is a dramatic sight from the beach, especially beside the dunes and lighthouse. It is not an abandoned building to enter or climb. Visit from the state park, view it from outside, and check beach conditions before walking out. The strange part is how a military structure once hidden inland now looks as though the sea delivered it.
