About Route 66 Rocker

A red rocking chair towers beside the Fanning 66 Outpost, turning a quiet stretch of historic Route 66 into an unmistakable photo stop. Built by Dan and Carolyn Sanazaro, the steel chair measures 42 feet, 1 inch tall. In 2008 it earned a Guinness record as the world’s largest rocking chair, although a larger example later took the title.

Its proportions are deliberately ordinary except for the impossible scale. The broad seat, curved rockers, and slatted back make a familiar piece of furniture feel like a roadside monument. The chair was originally designed to rock, but it was secured in place for safety, leaving its name to describe the shape rather than the motion.

Travelers can view the exterior for free beside the general store. The outpost is a few miles west of Cuba, a Missouri town known for Route 66 murals, so it works well as a short detour on a longer drive. Store hours may vary; the oversized chair remains the main attraction from the roadside.
