About Meramec Caverns
Meramec Caverns is a classic Missouri roadside attraction set beneath the hills near Stanton. The cave system’s broad passages and dramatic mineral formations helped make it a long-running stop for travelers on Route 66. Decades of advertising, including signs painted on barns across the country, made the name familiar well beyond the Ozarks.
Guided walks pass through illuminated rooms, flowstone, and towering formations while explaining the cave’s geology and its history as a commercial attraction. Local stories also connect the caverns to Jesse James, although the dramatic outlaw tales are best understood as part of the site’s roadside folklore rather than proven history.
The standard tour takes about one hour and twenty minutes over roughly a mile and a quarter round trip. It includes sloped walkways and stairs, and the cave stays near 58 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Current admission is $30.50 for ages twelve and up and $16.50 for children five through eleven; younger children are free. Check the day’s tour schedule before making the detour.
