About Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States

A small roadside park near Lebanon claims the geographic center of the 48 contiguous United States. A stone monument, flagpole, picnic shelter, and tiny chapel occupy the quiet site. The setting feels appropriately central and isolated, surrounded by open farmland near the Kansas-Nebraska border rather than by anything resembling a national plaza.

The commonly cited center was calculated in 1918 at approximately 39 degrees 50 minutes north and 98 degrees 35 minutes west. The method treated the mapped country like a flat shape of uniform weight and searched for its balance point. The United States Geological Survey emphasizes that geographic centers are approximations because definitions, coastlines, islands, and calculation methods differ.

The public monument does not stand on the precise point identified by the old calculation. That spot lies on private land nearby, so local organizers placed the visitor site beside the road where travelers could reach it. The practical substitution makes the marker an official-looking monument to a location that is both approximate and slightly displaced.

The park also contains a tiny chapel with only a handful of pews. Visitors have used it for weddings, notes, photographs, and quiet pauses during cross-country trips. The modest building and handmade-looking monuments give the site the atmosphere of a community project rather than a federal landmark.

The marker is west of Lebanon near the intersection of K-191 and AA Road. It is outdoors, free, and generally accessible without an attendant. Travelers should remember that the surrounding farmland is private property and remain within the marked public area. Weather and unpaved approaches can affect conditions.

The attraction is a pleasing geographic paradox. It marks the center, but not exactly. It represents the United States, but only the contiguous 48. It looks authoritative, but no government agency established the monumented point. Those qualifications do not diminish the place. They make the lonely little center of everything much more interesting.
