About The Big Duck
Long Island has a building shaped exactly like the product it once sold: duck. Built in 1931 as a poultry shop, the white concrete bird has glass eyes, a bright orange bill, and a belly big enough for visitors. It became such a famous example of literal roadside architecture that architects gave this kind of building its own nickname: a “duck.”
The Big Duck now serves as a small heritage stop in Flanders. You can admire the entire bird from outside even when the shop is closed. It is an easy, wonderfully absurd stop along NY-24, especially if you have ever wanted to walk into a duck.
