For one summer afternoon, Coney Island becomes a seaside kingdom of homemade sea monsters, glittering mermaids and wonderfully impractical costumes. The Mermaid Parade is an artist-powered procession that treats the ocean as an excuse for flamboyant, often surreal street theater.
Founded in 1983, the event brings together fantastical sea creatures, marching bands, dance groups and inventive floats under the ceremonial reign of a King Neptune and Queen Mermaid. This is not a conventional civic parade. Its personality comes from participants turning their own aquatic daydreams into wearable art.
The parade usually takes place in June along Surf Avenue and the boardwalk. Street-side spectators can watch free, while marching registration and selected extras have fees. Expect dense crowds, road closures and some revealing costumes. The map pin is a viewing-area reference point on Surf Avenue; check the current route before going.
