About Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

In Beckley, the museum tour goes underground. Visitors to the Exhibition Coal Mine board a low rail vehicle known as a man trip and travel roughly 1,500 feet into a former working mine beneath the hillside.

The underground route stays around 58 degrees throughout the year. Veteran miners guide the tours and explain equipment, mining methods, working conditions, and the practical realities of extracting coal from underground seams. Original mine passages and equipment turn the tour into something much more physical than a room of display cases.

Above ground, the attraction includes reconstructed and preserved buildings representing a historic coal camp, including homes and community structures. Together they show both halves of mining life: the industrial world below the surface and the communities that developed around it.

Coal history appears throughout West Virginia, but Beckley allows visitors to physically travel into it. A normal museum asks people to walk through galleries. This one puts them on a mining vehicle and sends them into a mountain.
