About World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Sugarcreek has a cuckoo clock that is closer to a small building than a mantelpiece decoration. The wooden structure stands more than 23 feet tall and roughly 24 feet wide, with an oversized clock face, mechanical figures, and a cuckoo large enough to be seen from across the street.

The clock was built in 1972 for a restaurant and later moved to Sugarcreek, where it was restored and installed in the downtown area in 2012. Its scale would be enough to qualify as a roadside attraction, but the mechanism is what makes it memorable.

At scheduled intervals, the cuckoo emerges while a mechanical band and dancing figures perform below the clock face. The entire facade becomes an oversized moving music box, complete with polka music and carved characters carrying out their routine for whoever happens to be waiting on the sidewalk.

The performance normally operates seasonally and is weather dependent. Visitors should check Sugarcreek’s official tourism information for current hours and operating months. Even when silent, the clock remains a wonderfully excessive piece of downtown machinery.
