About World’s Largest Covered Porch Swing

Hebron turned a familiar front-porch seat into a group activity. Its enormous covered swing stretches 32 feet across Roosevelt Park, with room said to fit 18 adults or 24 children. The overhead frame incorporates a section of center-pivot irrigation equipment, so this bit of roadside play also nods to the farms surrounding town.

The swing was built in 1985 and moved to its present park location in 1991. It has become Hebron’s signature photo stop, attracting visitors who want to test whether a piece of porch furniture can really hold a crowd. Claims about the precise world record have varied, but the object itself is impressively, unmistakably oversized.

Find it in Roosevelt Park near 5th Street and Jefferson Avenue. There is no admission charge, and a quick stop can become longer if other travelers join the bench for a picture. Its shade makes it a pleasant pause on a warm Nebraska drive. Give the swing a gentle push and look at the agricultural truss overhead: a practical piece of farm hardware has become a very strange porch roof.
