About Windsor Ruins

Deep in the woods outside Port Gibson, twenty-three full columns and five partial ones stand where an enormous mansion once dominated the landscape. Windsor was completed in 1861 and ranked among Mississippi’s grandest private homes. Its cast-iron capitals, brick columns, and broad galleries made the house visible from the nearby river country.

A guest’s discarded cigar reportedly started the 1890 fire that destroyed nearly everything except the masonry columns and iron stairways. The ruins have since become an unforgettable open-air monument, their pale colonnade rising above trees and undergrowth with no surviving rooms to explain their original scale.

A state stabilization project completed in 2023 repaired weakened masonry and added an accessible walking trail. The site is open from dawn to dusk and has no visitor facilities. Heavy rain can make surrounding roads difficult, so checking local conditions before traveling is wise. Admission is free, and the quiet approach through rural Claiborne County makes the first view especially dramatic.
