About Warren Redstone Missile
Warren has a town-green surprise that looks as if it landed from another chapter of American history: a towering Redstone missile. It is not a replica. The decommissioned rocket-era hardware came to this small White Mountains town in the early 1970s and now stands beside the start of the Warren Recreational Rail Trail.
Redstone began as a military missile, but modified versions helped launch the first American astronauts. That connection makes the display both a Cold War relic and a space-age curiosity. The missile did not itself carry Alan Shepard, despite the tempting story a passerby might invent. Its improbable placement is the fun part. A real piece of the missile age rises beside a rural road, with mountains rather than launch towers behind it. You can view it from the public area at the trailhead and continue down the old rail corridor if a brief rocket stop turns into a longer wander.
