About Very Large Array

Twenty-seven enormous radio antennas spread across the Plains of San Agustin in a giant Y. The dishes move along railroad tracks and work together as a single instrument, making the empty high-desert landscape look like a science-fiction set.

The visitor center explains what radio astronomy actually measures, and a self-guided walk reaches the base of an antenna. This is a working observatory, so follow posted access rules and allow time for the remote drive west of Socorro. There is no food on site.
