About Tripod Rock
Deep in Pyramid Mountain, a huge glacial boulder appears to balance on three smaller rocks. Its improbable stance makes Tripod Rock look more like a carefully assembled sculpture than a relic of the last ice age.
It is a natural formation, left behind as the Wisconsin Glacier retreated. The reward takes a real hike through rocky woodland, not a roadside pull-off. Start at the Pyramid Mountain visitor center, follow the park’s Tripod Rock route, and stay on marked trails. Resist the temptation to scramble onto the boulder: the view from the ground is the oddity.
