About Soda Dam
Beside NM-4 near Jemez Springs, mineral-rich springs have built a lumpy travertine dam across the Jemez River. It looks almost sculpted, with rounded ridges, warm trickles, and a natural opening where the river pushes through.
The odd formation is an easy roadside stop in a canyon of red rock. The highway cut through part of the deposit, so the scene is a mix of living geology and human alteration. Watch your footing around wet rock and keep clear of the roadway.
