About Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum

Gatlinburg has an entire museum devoted to the small containers people normally forget are sitting on the dinner table. The Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum contains more than 20,000 sets of shakers from around the world, along with a large collection of pepper mills, turning two ordinary seasonings into an overwhelming wall-to-wall obsession.

The displays reveal how aggressively designers have reinvented the same basic object. Shakers appear as animals, people, vehicles, food, buildings, souvenirs, holiday decorations, household objects, and shapes that make almost no visual sense as containers for salt or pepper. Sets are grouped by themes and materials, so visitors can watch decades of changing taste play out through thousands of tiny ceramic, glass, metal, wood, and plastic objects.

The museum grew from the Ludden family’s collection and eventually reached the point where a dedicated building became more reasonable than continuing to treat thousands of shakers as normal household possessions. There is even a sister museum in Spain. The Gatlinburg location calls itself the world’s only salt and pepper shaker museum, with the obvious footnote that its Spanish sibling belongs to the same wonderfully specific idea.

The experience is inexpensive, compact, and deeply excessive. A person can walk in thinking there cannot possibly be much variation in salt and pepper shakers and leave knowing that humanity has applied an astonishing amount of creative energy to the problem. Gatlinburg is packed with elaborate tourist attractions, but few are as gloriously specific as a building containing tens of thousands of tiny seasoning dispensers.
