About Peachoid

Drivers on Interstate 85 near Gaffney can see what appears to be a peach the size of an office building hovering above the trees. The Peachoid is actually a working municipal water tower capable of holding one million gallons.

The Gaffney Board of Public Works commissioned the tower in 1981. Chicago Bridge & Iron constructed the steel tank, while the finished design pushed far beyond a normal spherical water tower. A giant leaf stretches across the structure, a stem projects from the top, and the body was carefully painted in peach colors.

The tower rises about 135 feet. Its exaggerated central cleft has also made the Peachoid famous for looking slightly less like fruit from certain angles, an accidental visual joke that has become inseparable from the landmark’s reputation.

A small recreation area near the tower provides a much better look than the interstate. Gate hours can vary seasonally, so visitors should check the Gaffney Board of Public Works before arriving. Whether approached as civic infrastructure or enormous roadside produce, the Peachoid is difficult to mistake for anything else.
