About Missouri State Penitentiary
Missouri State Penitentiary opened in Jefferson City in 1836 and remained in operation for 168 years. Its heavy stone walls, cellblocks, and courtyards record changing approaches to incarceration across almost two centuries. After the prison closed in 2004, portions of the complex became available for guided public tours.
History tours pass through housing units and other spaces while guides explain escapes, riots, daily routines, and the lives of people confined and employed here. Some routes include the former gas chamber, a stark reminder that this is a real institutional history rather than a themed attraction. Separate after-dark tours focus on the site’s reputation for strange experiences.
All prison tours are guided, with varying lengths, prices, age limits, and seasonal schedules. The small museum costs $2 on its own and is included with a prison tour. Book a tour in advance and check the operator’s current requirements before arriving. The massive, weathered complex offers a close look at a difficult chapter of Missouri history.
