About Havre Beneath the Streets
Havre has a second business district below its ordinary streets. After a fire devastated much of the town in 1904, merchants carried on underground while the surface was rebuilt. Today’s guided tour recreates that below-street world with a saloon, laundry, bakery, shopfronts, and other spaces that reveal how a community improvised after disaster.
The underground is both a preserved setting and a historical recreation, so the tour explains which parts tell the story of Havre’s early businesses. It also discusses less respectable stops, including a bordello and an opium den. Descending from a familiar main street into a network of old rooms makes the town feel surprisingly layered.
Tours start at 120 3rd Avenue. The operator lists adult admission at $17, children ages 6 to 12 at $9, and ages five and under free. Call to book and confirm the available time before traveling. The oddity is not merely underground rooms; it is the idea of an entire commercial life continuing below the town.
