About Fremont Troll

Under the north end of Seattle’s Aurora Bridge, a giant concrete troll has been waiting for traffic since 1990. The Fremont Troll rises about eighteen feet high beneath the roadway, staring forward with a shiny metal eye while one enormous hand wraps around a real Volkswagen Beetle.

The sculpture was created after the Fremont Arts Council sponsored a competition to improve the neglected space beneath the bridge. A team led by artists Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter, and Ross Whitehead won with the idea of placing a troll beneath the span, turning a dark leftover patch of infrastructure into one of Seattle’s most recognizable public artworks.

The Volkswagen is what pushes the sculpture from large fantasy figure into full roadside absurdity. The car is not a small prop. It is an actual Beetle partially embedded beneath the troll’s hand, as though the creature plucked it from the road and never finished the snack.

Visitors can walk directly up to the sculpture and climb around portions of it, making the troll less like a distant monument and more like a piece of neighborhood terrain. Seattle has plenty of public art, but few pieces fit their location as perfectly as an enormous troll permanently living under a bridge.
