About Forestiere Underground Gardens

The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a unique subterranean garden complex located in Fresno, California, created over a period of approximately 40 years by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere. Without formal architectural training, Forestiere carved an intricate network of underground rooms, passageways, and planting spaces beneath the property he purchased in the early twentieth century.

Forestiere arrived in the United States from Sicily in the late 1800s and eventually settled in California’s Central Valley. After purchasing land that proved difficult to farm because of its dense, compacted soil, he began digging downward rather than attempting to cultivate the surface. Inspired by underground structures he had seen in Sicily, Forestiere spent decades using hand tools to excavate the landscape and create a place where plants could grow in a cooler underground environment.

The result was a remarkable underground ecosystem covering multiple levels. The gardens include tunnels, patios, courtyards, seating areas, and planting chambers carved from the hard soil. Forestiere designed the spaces to allow sunlight and fresh air to reach plants growing below ground, creating a surprisingly productive environment in an otherwise challenging landscape.

Throughout his lifetime, Forestiere planted a wide variety of fruit trees, vines, and ornamental plants within the underground gardens. Some plants were trained to grow through openings in the ceilings and walls, allowing them to reach sunlight while remaining connected to the underground structure. The combination of architecture, engineering, and horticulture created a one-of-a-kind environment that reflected Forestiere’s creativity and determination.

Forestiere worked on the gardens until his death in 1946, leaving behind a handcrafted underground world unlike anything else in California. For many years, the site remained relatively unknown outside the local area, but it was eventually recognized as an important example of folk architecture and visionary design.

Today, the Forestiere Underground Gardens are preserved as a historic attraction where visitors can explore the passages and chambers created by one person’s decades-long effort. The site is a testament to imagination, patience, and the ability to transform an unlikely piece of land into something extraordinary.
