About Fantasy Canyon

Fantasy Canyon is small enough to explore quickly and strange enough to look as if someone spent centuries carving it by hand. Delicate sandstone has weathered into thin ribs, miniature arches, knobs, faces, animals, towers, and forms that visitors routinely name after whatever they think they resemble.

The Bureau of Land Management describes the site as a miniature canyon packed with intricate and peculiar stone figures. The unusual shapes developed because portions of the sandstone were cemented differently and resisted erosion at different rates. Wind and water removed the softer material, leaving behind a collection of structures far more complicated than the surrounding desert suggests.

The concentration is what makes the site especially odd. Fantasy Canyon covers only a small area, but one delicate shape sits beside another until the landscape begins to resemble a natural sculpture garden. Formations have acquired informal names inspired by witches, animals, and other imaginary figures.

The same erosion that created the canyon continues to threaten it. The BLM warns that the sandstone is soft, brittle, and easily damaged by touch or climbing. Fantasy Canyon may look like durable stone architecture, but some of its strangest features are surprisingly fragile.
