About Eternal Flame Falls
Behind a small waterfall in Chestnut Ridge Park, a natural gas seep can feed a flickering flame in a recess of shale. Water and fire occupy the same little grotto, making the scene look like a practical joke by geology. The flame is not guaranteed to be lit at all times, and the waterfall changes with rainfall.
Reaching the falls requires a hike on a natural trail that can be muddy and slippery. Stay on the marked route and check park conditions before setting out. Even when the flame is out, the rock alcove and cascade are an unusual sight.
