About Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron
Beside a surplus yard near North Freedom stands what looks like the remains of an industrial civilization that developed very different priorities. Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron is a towering environment built from salvaged industrial machinery, old scientific equipment, metal spheres, generators, pipes, gears, and pieces whose original purposes have been completely absorbed into a new machine.
Its creator was Tom Every, a demolition expert and industrial salvager who reinvented himself artistically as Dr. Evermor. He began assembling the Forevertron in the 1980s from material collected during decades of dismantling factories and other industrial sites.
The structure rises roughly fifty feet and stretches well over one hundred feet across the site. Every connected the sculpture to an elaborate fictional story in which Dr. Evermor intended to launch himself into the heavens using the machine. Real industrial artifacts were given new identities as pieces of the imaginary apparatus.
Smaller creatures, mechanical birds, orchestras, and other sculptures surround the main work, turning the property into an entire metal world. Some components have serious technological histories. Others look as if they were designed by an engineer after a very strange dream.
Forevertron works because the salvage never completely stops looking functional. Visitors can see valves, tanks, cables, wheels, and equipment that once performed real jobs. They have simply been reassigned to a machine whose only practical purpose is being gloriously impossible.
