About Bird Cage Theatre
The Bird Cage Theatre is a historic theater and saloon located in Tombstone, Arizona, one of the most famous mining towns of the American Old West. Built in 1881, the theater became a center of entertainment during Tombstone’s silver boom, offering performances, gambling, drinking, and nightlife for miners, cowboys, travelers, and residents seeking excitement after long days in the mines.
The theater was constructed by William “Billy” Hutchinson and William “Billy” M. A. D. B. “Billy” H. It featured a unique layout designed to maximize entertainment and gambling opportunities. The building included a stage, bar, restaurant, gambling tables, and private rooms known as “cribs” located above the main floor. These small enclosed spaces inspired the theater’s unusual name, as they resembled bird cages hanging above the activity below.
During its operating years, the Bird Cage Theatre became known for its nonstop activity. According to local tradition, the venue operated around the clock for several years, serving as a gathering place during Tombstone’s most prosperous period. The theater hosted performers, musicians, and variety acts, while its gambling tables attracted many of the people drawn to the wealth and lawlessness of the mining frontier.
The Bird Cage Theatre is also closely connected to the famous history of Tombstone, including the era surrounding the conflict between the Earp brothers and the Cowboys that culminated in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. While the theater was not the site of that famous confrontation, it existed during the same turbulent period when Tombstone was filled with rivalries, fortunes, and frontier disputes.
After Tombstone’s mining economy declined, the theater eventually closed in 1892. Unlike many Old West buildings that were demolished or remodeled, the Bird Cage Theatre remained largely preserved. The building was later reopened as a museum, allowing visitors to explore its original interior and view artifacts connected to its colorful past.
Today, the Bird Cage Theatre stands as one of Tombstone’s best-known historic attractions. Visitors can walk through the preserved rooms, see the original stage and furnishings, and experience a rare surviving example of an authentic frontier entertainment hall. Its combination of architecture, history, and legends makes it one of Arizona’s most recognizable Old West landmarks.
