About Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden

Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden looks less like a planned attraction than the aftermath of several decades of jokes escaping into a yard. Rusted tools, old signs, discarded machines, mannequins, toys, and everyday junk have been rearranged into a sprawling collection of visual puns and homemade creatures. The result is dense, funny, slightly bewildering, and almost impossible to absorb in one glance.

The property began much more conventionally. Oral Wallace bought the land in 1928, planted an apple orchard, made cider, and developed a roadside store and gas station. Decades later, his grandson Keith Holt returned after working in entertainment in California. In 2005 he came back with two truckloads of toys and plans to restore the old property and build an enormous Toyland display.

The project kept growing. Holt filled the grounds with what the attraction calls “wacky punny folk art,” while Toyland expanded into a huge indoor diorama containing thousands of vintage toys and trains. The old country store became part museum, part family time capsule, and part backdrop for an outdoor environment where nearly anything can be turned into a joke if it has enough bolts, paint, and imagination.

This is not polished theme-park weirdness. Its appeal is the handmade overload and the sense that one person’s private sense of humor has physically taken over a roadside property. The attraction operates independently and hours can change, so visitors should check the official site before making a special trip.
