About America’s Stonehenge

In a Salem woodland, stone chambers, walls, and passages have inspired a very New England argument: who built them, and when? The site was once called Mystery Hill. Its present name invites comparison with England’s Stonehenge, but the two places have no established historical connection. Some visitors see traces of very old construction; skeptics point to colonial farming and later alterations. The uncertainty is part of the attraction.

Walk the marked route through the stonework and you will find low chambers, an imposing slab often called the Sacrificial Table, and alignments that have fueled decades of speculation. The museum presents its own interpretation, while the landscape gives you room to form yours. This is a paid, year-round visit with outdoor walking, so wear shoes for uneven ground. Come for the stones, stay for the deliciously unresolved question of what you are looking at.
