Squonkapalooza

Johnstown gives Pennsylvania's famously miserable Squonk its own festival of folklore, cryptids, speakers, vendors and creature-themed activities.

Squonkapalooza celebrates the Squonk, a creature from Pennsylvania lumberwoods folklore said to hide among hemlock forests and cry over its unfortunate appearance. The festival uses that peculiar legend as a gateway into Appalachian folklore, regional cryptids and other strange stories rooted in American tradition.

Bottle Works in Johnstown hosts the free, all-ages gathering, which brings together speakers, artists, vendors and folklore enthusiasts. Activities have included the Squonk Quest along with booths selling cryptid-themed artwork, crafts and merchandise. The event is intentionally playful, treating the gloomy little creature as both local folklore and a mascot for an unusual community celebration.
