Bishopville’s festival is rooted in the Lizard Man legend associated with nearby Scape Ore Swamp, one of South Carolina’s best-known local monster stories. Rather than treating the tale as settled fact, the event embraces the creature as a piece of Lee County folklore and community identity.
The Stomp takes over downtown Bishopville with a parade, food and merchandise vendors, live entertainment, arts and crafts, children’s activities and other community programming. Visitors can expect plenty of Lizard Man references throughout the day, along with conventional small-town festival attractions. Main Street functions as the central festival corridor.
