Grand Haven Winterfest Cardboard Sled Race

Grand Haven sends homemade cardboard sleds hurtling down Mulligan's Hollow in a winter race where outrageous design matters almost as much as reaching the bottom.

The Cardboard Sled Race is one of Grand Haven Winterfest’s signature attractions. Teams design human-powered sleds from corrugated cardboard, then take them to the front ski slope at Mulligan’s Hollow for judging and a downhill run that rewards creativity, team spirit and survival as much as speed.

Winterfest itself includes several days of cold-weather activities, but the sled race is the event that most strongly delivers the oddity factor. The 2027 race is confirmed for Saturday, January 30, with registration at 10 a.m. and racing beginning at 11 a.m. Participation and viewing are free.
