About Miles the Monster

Outside Dover Motor Speedway, a hulking concrete creature rises above Victory Plaza with glowing red eyes and a full-size race car clenched in one enormous fist. This is Miles the Monster, the snarling mascot of the track nicknamed the Monster Mile. At 46 feet tall and weighing roughly 20 tons, Miles looks less like a friendly sports mascot and more like something that escaped from a vintage creature feature.

The speedway introduced the modern version of Miles in 2000, drawing inspiration from the track’s unforgiving one-mile concrete oval. The permanent Monster Monument followed in 2008 as part of a major renovation of the fan area. Around the base, plaques honor drivers who have conquered the track, turning the giant monster into both a roadside spectacle and an unusual racing shrine.

Visitors can get their best view from Victory Plaza near the speedway entrance. The statue is especially striking up close, where its scale, exaggerated muscles, jagged teeth, and crushed car become impossible to miss. Access around the plaza can change during major race weekends, so visitors should check the speedway schedule before planning a stop.

Miles succeeds because the monument fully commits to the Monster Mile theme. Rather than settling for a sign or ordinary mascot statue, Dover built a giant concrete brute that appears ready to tear the speedway apart. It is one of Delaware’s most recognizable roadside oddities and an easy photo stop for racing fans and monster hunters alike.
