Hopkinsville Goblins

The Hopkinsville Goblins are the beings reported during the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter of August 21, 1955. Billy Ray Taylor, who was visiting the Sutton family near Kelly, Kentucky, said he saw a bright object descend beyond the farmhouse. Later that evening, people inside reported small figures approaching the house, peering through windows, and appearing near the doorway. Witness descriptions emphasized short stature, unusually large glowing eyes, long thin arms, clawlike hands, and a peculiar way of moving. They did not originally describe the figures as green, despite the later "little green men" nickname.

The family responded with gunfire, using a shotgun and rifle when the figures appeared around the property. Five adults and seven children eventually fled to the Hopkinsville police station, where their frightened account prompted officers and other authorities to investigate the farmhouse. The creatures were no longer present when police arrived, and no body, blood, wreckage, or other physical evidence of a nonhuman visitor was recovered. The reported beings nevertheless became the most memorable feature of the case and developed a distinct identity apart from the encounter itself.

Later explanations have focused on possible misidentification, especially great horned owls. Their eyes can reflect strongly at night, they have prominent ear tufts, and their wings and talons can create a strange silhouette under poor lighting. A meteor was also reported across the region that evening and has been proposed as the bright object that began the sequence. These explanations remain reconstructions rather than proven solutions. The Goblins are the reported entities associated with the broader Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter.

Evidence and claims

The family’s report to police and the subsequent investigation are documented. The existence of nonhuman creatures at the farmhouse was never established, and the witnesses did not originally describe the beings as green.
