About Flatwoods Monster Chairs
Braxton County has turned one mysterious 1952 report into a five-stop collection of giant furniture. The Flatwoods Monster Chairs are ten-foot-tall wooden seats painted to resemble different versions of the creature associated with one of West Virginia’s best-known unexplained incidents.
The story began on September 12, 1952, when local residents reported seeing a strange object cross the sky and later described encountering an unusual figure near Flatwoods. The account became known as the Flatwoods Monster or Braxton County Monster story and has remained part of local folklore ever since.
Decades later, local woodworker Allan Johnson built a series of giant chairs based on the creature. Each is large enough for visitors to climb onto a platform between the monster’s arms for photographs, and each was given a somewhat different paint scheme.
Five chairs are now spread through Braxton County, with the first stop at the Flatwoods Municipal Building on Doctors Lane and others around Sutton and Gassaway. The attraction effectively turns cryptid hunting into a scavenger hunt for enormous chairs. Whatever anyone thinks happened in 1952, the physical result is wonderfully indisputable: West Virginia has a county full of ten-foot monster furniture.
