About Mothman Statue

Downtown Point Pleasant has a twelve-foot stainless steel creature standing in the middle of town with enormous wings, red eyes, muscular legs, and an anatomy that does not improve the longer anyone looks at it. The sculpture is the city’s monument to the Mothman, the mysterious figure associated with a burst of reported sightings around Point Pleasant in the 1960s.

Reports began attracting attention in November 1966, when witnesses described encountering a large winged figure with glowing red eyes. Similar reports continued over the following months and eventually became one of West Virginia’s most enduring pieces of modern folklore.

Point Pleasant did not let the story fade. Artist Bob Roach created the stainless steel Mothman statue, which was installed in 2003. Its wings spread dramatically behind a humanoid body while its round red eyes stare toward the surrounding downtown buildings.

The statue now anchors a larger local Mothman culture that includes the nearby Mothman Museum and an annual festival. Whether visitors arrive as believers, skeptics, folklore fans, or people who simply appreciate enormous metal monsters, the statue gives the story a physical address. Very few towns have committed to a local mystery quite as enthusiastically as Point Pleasant.
