About World’s Largest Egg
Winlock has been identifying itself with an enormous egg for generations. The current city landmark is about twelve feet long and weighs roughly 1,200 pounds, sitting in Vern Zander Memorial Park as an oversized reminder of the poultry and egg industry that once helped define the town.
The giant-egg tradition dates back to 1923, when Winlock erected an oversized egg as part of a celebration of local poultry production. That original did not last forever, and later versions were created as materials weathered, deteriorated, or were replaced.
The result is less a single century-old object than a civic idea that refuses to die. Winlock keeps rebuilding an enormous egg because, at some point, the egg stopped being advertising and became part of the town’s identity.
The City of Winlock still promotes the landmark as the World’s Largest Egg and lists it among the community’s defining features. Whether or not some other place eventually builds a larger egg matters less than the commitment involved. Winlock has been maintaining a giant roadside egg in one form or another for more than a hundred years.
