About Jake the Alligator Man

Marsh’s Free Museum in Long Beach contains enough oddities to fill an entire roadside attraction, but one resident has become its undisputed celebrity. Jake the Alligator Man has a dried humanlike upper body fused to the lower body of an alligator, creating exactly the sort of creature old carnival posters would promise was absolutely real.

Jake’s origins are deliberately murky, which is part of the fun. Objects like him have a long history in sideshow culture, where fabricated creatures and mysterious preserved specimens were presented with just enough uncertainty to keep audiences arguing. Marsh’s has wisely allowed much of that mystery to remain intact.

The rest of the museum is hardly normal. Displays have included unusual animal specimens, an eight-legged lamb, a two-headed calf, enormous snake skins, antique arcade machines, mechanical fortune tellers, shells, souvenirs, and generations of roadside curios. The business has operated as a Long Beach attraction for decades while remaining free to enter.

Jake has become so embedded in local culture that birthday celebrations have been held in his honor. That is an impressive second career for a creature whose first job was simply to make people stare through a glass case and ask what, exactly, they were looking at.
