About Foamhenge

Stonehenge took ancient builders enormous amounts of labor and stone. Virginia artist Mark Cline recreated the basic experience with foam.

Cline built Foamhenge in 2004 as a life-size imitation of the famous prehistoric monument. Large blocks of expanded foam were carved and painted to resemble weathered stone, then arranged in the familiar circle of upright slabs and horizontal lintels. From the right distance, the material becomes considerably less obvious.

The replica originally stood near Natural Bridge, Virginia, where it became a popular roadside attraction. It was later dismantled and moved north. Foamhenge debuted at Cox Farms in Centreville in 2017 and remains on the farm’s private property.

Access is limited to specific Cox Farms events and scheduled periods rather than unrestricted roadside visiting, so current hours should be checked before making the trip. The relocation did not make the idea any less strange. Virginia still has a full-size Stonehenge imitation whose great engineering achievement is that the enormous stones are not stones.
