About World’s Largest Cowboy Boots
Outside North Star Mall in San Antonio stands a pair of cowboy boots that no human could wear without becoming a public infrastructure project. The sculptures rise more than 35 feet high and stretch more than 30 feet from heel to toe, turning one of Texas’s most familiar pieces of footwear into architecture.
Artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade created the boots in 1979 for a public art project in Washington, D.C. They were later purchased and moved to San Antonio, where the giant Western footwear found a setting that made considerably more thematic sense. Their size eventually earned recognition as the world’s largest cowboy boots.
The surfaces are decorated to resemble worn leather, stitching, and patterned boot shafts, which makes the sculptures feel like ordinary cowboy boots enlarged by an impossible photocopier. People and vehicles passing beneath them provide the scale reference needed to understand just how much boot is involved.
The boots work especially well as an oddity because their location is completely functional. They are not isolated in a sculpture park or protected behind museum walls. They stand beside a shopping mall entrance, where visitors can park, shop, eat, and casually pass two pieces of footwear taller than many buildings.
