About Crook Point Bridge

For half a century, one Providence drawbridge has looked permanently stuck in the middle of opening.

The Crook Point Bascule Bridge was built in 1908 to carry railroad traffic across the Seekonk River between Providence and East Providence. Its movable steel span could lift to clear marine traffic, then lower again when trains needed to cross.

Rail service ended in 1976. The bridge was left raised, and the abandoned structure gradually became one of the city’s most recognizable industrial silhouettes. Its steeply angled span now points into the sky above the river, looking less like ordinary infrastructure than a giant mechanical sculpture.

The bridge is unused and not open for casual exploration. It should be viewed only from lawful public locations on shore or nearby paths. Plans for preservation, reuse, or eventual removal have changed over time, so visitors should check current city and state information rather than assuming the structure will remain exactly as it is forever.
