About Kecksburg Space Acorn

On December 9, 1965, a bright fireball crossed a broad section of North America and became connected with reports that something had come down near the small community of Kecksburg. What actually happened remains disputed. The roadside monument created from the story is much easier to verify.

Witness accounts collected over the years described an object with an acorn or bell-like shape and unusual markings around its lower edge. Those descriptions became the basis for a full-size replica built for a 1990 episode of the television series Unsolved Mysteries.

The prop stayed in Kecksburg and eventually became the town’s most recognizable object. Mounted on a raised platform near the volunteer fire department, the oversized acorn now serves as a permanent monument to an incident that continues to inspire competing explanations ranging from a meteor to space debris to more extraordinary claims.

Visitors should treat those explanations as claims rather than established fact. The replica itself is the real oddity. It can be viewed near the fire department, which also helps organize the annual Kecksburg UFO Festival. Use the department’s current information for events and visitor details.
