About Center of the Universe

Tulsa’s Center of the Universe is visually modest. A small circular marker sits within concentric rings of brick on an elevated pedestrian bridge above railroad tracks. The strange part begins when someone stands in the center and makes a sound.

A clap, shout, or ordinary sentence returns with an unusual echo or metallic quality that is especially noticeable to the person standing near the middle. Move away from the center and the effect changes. The site has inspired plenty of exaggerated explanations, but no supernatural claim is required. The acoustic behavior itself is the attraction.

The circle sits within a larger downtown plaza near the steel sculpture Artificial Cloud. Curved walls, hard surfaces, bridge geometry, and the surrounding built environment all contribute to the unusual setting, although descriptions of exactly why the acoustic effect behaves as it does vary.

The pedestrian bridge and plaza underwent major rehabilitation during 2026, so current access must be verified before traveling. The project plans preserve the acoustic feature while improving the surrounding public space. Once accessible, the experiment is wonderfully simple: stand in the circle, make a noise, then take one step away and try it again.
