About Guru Road
Two miles north of Gerlach, a dirt road turns into a mile-long conversation with the desert. Stones along Guru Road carry carved and painted sayings; improvised sculptures, an Elvis tribute, and a weather station appear between them. Some messages are wise, some ridiculous, and all make the road feel unlike any other.
Gerlach resident DeWayne “Dooby” Williams began shaping the route in the late 1970s. With help from others, he transformed an ordinary stretch beside State Route 34 into a folk-art environment now also known as Dooby Lane.
You can walk the route for free at any time, but travel conditions matter. The road ruts easily when wet, so avoid driving it after rain. Leave the art as you found it—no new graffiti, no souvenirs taken from the stones.
