About International Car Forest of the Last Church
Goldfield has a forest with no trees. More than 40 cars, vans, trucks, and buses have been planted nose-first in the desert or stacked at improbable angles, then turned into brightly painted canvases. The International Car Forest of the Last Church looks like a junkyard that wandered into an art show.
The project began with Goldfield resident Mark Rippie and grew with artists including Chad Sorg. The vehicle collection keeps changing as commissioned artists add new work, so a return visit may look different from the last. Nevada’s state tourism office calls it one of the country’s largest car forests.
This is a free, open-air stop just east of US 95. Walk among the cars, but leave the paint to the artists: the current stewards ask visitors not to tag vehicles or break windows. Daylight is best for seeing the sculptures and navigating the dirt approach.
