About Pictograph Cave

A short drive from Billings leads to a sandstone cliff with three caves and a remarkable record of human activity. Pictograph Cave contains rock paintings made across many generations; the oldest are more than two thousand years old. Figures include animals, people, and later images that reflect changing lives on the plains.

A three-quarter-mile loop trail connects the caves with interpretive signs, while the visitor center displays the site’s archaeological story. Roughly 30,000 artifacts were recovered during early excavations. The paintings can be faint, and binoculars help when viewing them from the designated trail. This is a place to look carefully, not to touch the rock.

The state park’s hours vary by season and it closes on some winter weekdays. Residents whose vehicle registration includes the parks fee enter without a daily charge; nonresidents pay $8 per vehicle or $4 as a walk-in. Budget at least an hour for the trail and exhibits.
