About Garnet Ghost Town
High in the Garnet Range, weathered storefronts and homes still mark the streets of a gold-mining town. Around a thousand people lived here in the 1890s. When mining faded, residents gradually left, but many buildings remained standing, giving visitors a rare chance to walk through the physical outline of a Montana boomtown.
The Bureau of Land Management preserves Garnet as a historic site. In summer, a visitor center explains daily life in the community; in winter, access is generally by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes. Both summer approaches are gravel, and the Bear Gulch route is steep and unsuitable for trailers or RVs. Check road conditions before setting out.
Current entry is $10 for visitors 16 and older, while younger visitors enter free. Take time to look into the buildings and down the empty street: the oddity here is how much of a vanished town still feels present.
