About Ringing Rocks

A jumble of dark boulders east of Butte hides a peculiar trick. Tap the rocks gently with a hammer and many ring with bell-like, metallic notes. Individual stones make different sounds, so a short walk across the pile can feel like a rough outdoor instrument. Leave the rocks in place: removing them can change the conditions that make them ring.

The Bureau of Land Management manages this natural formation and gives precise coordinates for the site. The approach leaves Interstate 90 at the Pipestone exit, follows gravel roads, and crosses railroad tracks before reaching the rocks. A high-clearance vehicle is necessary for the final stretch; wet weather can make the route harder.

There is no entry fee and no elaborate visitor center. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and a small hammer if you want to try the sound. The reward is immediate and surprisingly playful: an ordinary-looking hillside that becomes musical when touched.
