About Birthplace of Kermit the Frog

Leland proudly calls itself the Birthplace of the Frog because Muppets creator Jim Henson spent much of his childhood beside Deer Creek. The small Delta landscape, alive with frogs and other wildlife, helped shape the imagination that later produced Kermit and an entire cast of beloved characters.

The local exhibit occupies a former visitor center overlooking the water. Inside are family photographs, childhood memorabilia, Henson history, and a replica Kermit donated as part of the Jim Henson Delta Boyhood Exhibit. Displays connect an internationally famous creative career to the ordinary creek banks, school years, and community memories of a Mississippi boyhood.

Admission is free, though donations help maintain the museum. Hours can vary by season, so checking the official site before traveling is sensible. Leland also celebrates the connection around town, including a Kermit-themed water tower that makes an especially playful roadside photo. The museum is modest in size, but that intimacy suits its story: a global pop-culture icon traced back to one child’s encounters with the natural world.
